Behind the Lens

I’m RJ, a photographer born and raised in Hawaiʻi, where the landscape and wildlife have long shaped how I see the world.

I began my photography journey in 2012, initially drawn to landscapes and the way light, weather, and time transformed familiar places. Over the years, I've dabbled in many different genre of photography, but my focus gradually evolved toward wildlife— particularly birds. What started as observation and curiosity, became patience and connection. Today, much of my work centers on Hawaiʻi’s endemic and native species, whose beauty is matched by their vulnerability.

My approach is rooted in respect for my subjects and their habitats. I’m drawn to moments that feel natural and unforced, whether documenting wildlife in its environment, landscapes at rest, or occasional street and portrait scenes that capture everyday life.

Living in Hawaiʻi has fostered a deep appreciation for the delicate balance of the natural world. Through my work, I strive to preserve moments of our endemic and native Hawaiian birds that speaks to both their beauty and vulnerability.
